Detailed map of the canton Schaffhausen with all communities and districts
Hofen is situated in the district Unterer Reiat, in the heart of the Biber valley. The four communities Altdorf, Bibern, Hofen and Opfertshofen form the Unterer Reiat (the lower Reiat), the three communities Lohn, Büttenhardt and Stetten form the Oberer Reiat (the upper Reiat). Through the Biber valley flows the brook called Biber whose origin is about 20 km away from the frontier with Germany. After it passes Hofen and Bibern it flows on to Thayngen - Ramsen - Bibermühle where it finally flows into the Rhine.
As has been already mentioned, Hofen belongs to the canton Schaffhausen, a relatively small canton in comparison with the big canton Zurich. It consists of three parts. Above all it is worth mentioning that the community Büsingen, which is entirely enclosed in the main part of the canton, is an enclave - it belongs to Germany.
